According to BIS there are an estimated 275,000 black and minority ethnic (BME) SMEs in the UK, making up six per cent of all SMEs in the UK, across a diverse range of industries. Horsesmouth mentors and our business partners prove there’s much going on in BME businesses. But there’s still more to do.
Young BME entrepreneurs are already making a big impact and look set to continue to do so with the support of partners like Make Your Mark and the Prince’s Trust, who continue to identify role models and raise awareness of the benefits of enterprise amongst a wide range of people and communities. Read inspiring stories from ethnic minority entrepreneurs or find out about the programmes to help you become your own business success story.
Although many BME businesses benefit from strong family networks, many mentees also find value in seeking out inspiration and perspectives from beyond these networks.
On horsesmouth we have many mentors from BME communities to inspire and inform, like missbubbles aged 30, who was born in London to Jamaican parents and is offering BME Career Development. She believes black and ethnic minority people face unique challenges in the business world, and is happy to give advice about useful steps to take.
Or talk to miagi1 aged 46, who came to England in 1972 from Pakistan at the age of nine, and is now married with five children and a qualified Fitness and Martial Arts Instructor. Previously a BME Senior Warden, he has a good understanding of local youth issues and has valuable links with agencies and organisations working with young people. He also works with a local crisis centre for Women to deliver personal safety sessions for women.
“I am motivated by the fact that whatever comes out of the horsesmouth is backed by personal experience of an individual, for me the powerhouse is the Heart, whatever comes out of the heart is practical and achievable. I feel that if I can help a person in any way or form to live a good life without going through hardships to find out that they have made a wrong choice, then I have done a good deed.”
