Self description

Male , 23

I am currently going into my final year of studying for a degree in sociology with criminology in criminal justice studies. I left school at 15 with no qualifications and spent a lot of time doing things I shouldn't, drugs, drinking excessively etc. In my life I have experienced many things, I've been the victim of an unprovoked assult twice, had problems with family relationships, education and employment and many other areas. At the age of around 18/19 after years of wasting time doing things I shouldn't, I motivated myself to go to college to gain a diploma to get to university. I'm all about giving people a chance, sometimes we all go through hard times and there is always a way to push past this and get through it.

Life experiences

Drugs and alcohol

I have a broad knowledge of the subject.I have given up taking drugs in the past and gone on to reform my life.

Relationships,family, and life at home

I have experience in living in an environment where family bonds were at a time nearly non-existent.In recent years I have realised the importance of having a family to support me and that strong family bonds are one of the most important things in life. I have created strong bonds with my family after years of not communicating much.

Education

I have reformed myself from having no qualifications to gaining a diploma in sociology with psychology and going on to study for a BA/Hons in sociology with criminology and criminal justice studies. I would never have done this if I had not been given advice by others to motivate me to get back into education after leaving it behind at the age of 15 because of a lack of motivation and teenage angst. I have gained so much experience from my education and life experiences.

Why mentor on horsesmouth?

I want to become a mentor because I know from my experience that talking is the best medicine to any problem, be it a serious problem or a not so serious problem. I was always grateful for somebody to listen to me in an empathetic and non-judgemental way whenever I was going through a hard time, and needed advice. An understanding and motivating listener will always make you feel 100 times better. I believe that with my life experiences in a variety of areas I would be a useful and valuable mentor. I will give anybody a chance, no matter what their background, if they need advice or want to reform themeselves as a person completely, I will approach the problem with an empathetic nature and try my hardest to come up with a solution or a direction in which that indivudal may want to take. I believe this website is a great way of supporting individuals, some may not have access to services such as youth centres etc. or some may wish to remain annonymous. I would love to be involved.

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
