Self description

Male , 49

Today, I am in the fortunate position of being a "business angel". That is someone who invests their own capital in your business in exchange for a percentage of the company. Yes - I am a real-life Dragon's Den.

I also run to very successful start-up businesses. The first is a company which provides interim and gap management services to public sector and not-for-profit organisations. The second is a motor media company which provides professional road test reports and other motoring content to local and regional publications.

On the way, I have also been involved in two previous start-ups and turned around four loss-making businesses. I have also been a Special Adviser to four Cabinet Ministers at the Dept of Trade

Life experiences

Business Start-ups and Company Growth

I have been my own boss since I left school at 16, and have spent the last two decades or more learning from others.

This learning has culminated in a philosophy which I now adopt, but which is constantly changing. Basically it identifies six areas within an organisation that, if equal emphasis is placed on them, will be sure to help that organisation grow in a sustainable and balanced way.

That philosophy is called (unsurprisingly) the Six Pillars Philosophy. In case you are wondering, the Six Pillars are:

1: Strategic Leadership

Entrepreneurial Mindset and Personal Development

I am fascinated at how successful people became successful. In particular, what drives them, what keeps them focused - in short how does their mindset differ from the norm.

There are three qualities which stand out for me - and one of those is innate (in other words, it cannot be taught). And that quality is Passion. If someone isn't passionate about their own business, why should I be passionate about helping them?

The only two qualities follow passion. These can be developed overtime and steadily build as experience builds confidence. However, they are nevertheless essential qualities, and these two additional qualities are focus and self-belief.

So, there you have it - passion, focus and self-belief. Three qualities that successful people - particularly entrepreneurs - demonstrate in abundance.

If you have passion, and an inkling of focus or self-belief, or you want help developing these two particular qualities - get in touch.

Young Entrepreneurship

Young entrepreneurs are our future. They are the future engines of growth for this and the global economy.

However, many would-be young entrepreneurs (typically 14-24) are often put off and never reach their full potential because either they are considered dreamers - or because they just do not know where to turn to for help.

So, if you are a young entrepreneur - whether you are already trading or aspiring to be one, and you feel I can help contribute to your future success - please get in touch with me.

Similarly, if you are a teacher who is engaged in a 'business in school' activity and you would like to engage the services of a battle-hardened guy with business experience, please don't hesitate to get in touch if you feel I could make a contribution.

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
