Self description

Female , 45

I qualified as a nursery nurse in the early 90's gaining a diploma, I've worked in schools and nurseries but also as a nanny to various families. I now am self employed and working as a childminder. My life hasn't been a bed of roses and I have endured some traumas, many of which happened this past year - I lost my mum and brother-in-law within 5 months, I was my mum's full time carer having given up work, so I lost a whole way of life. I miss her terribly and know the pain, physical and emotional, that comes with grief.
I am 40 years old.

Life experiences

bereavement

I lost two loved ones last year and desperately needed someone to talk to. I believe my experience could help others in similar situations.

Disability.

As I have PFFD and became an amputee aged 13 I believe I could help people facing difficulties in life due to a disability.

carer support/dementia/leukeamia/elderly/children

I have worked with children for over 15 years and have experienced many different situations in this field, illnesses, minor and major, I've worked with children with special needs and also lived through the joys and rewards of working with children and babies.
I was also carer for my mum for many years, she had leukemia and dementia so I know how hard it is to be a carer and the need for support.

Why mentor on horsesmouth?

I feel I have experienced much in life and would like to help support others who have gone through similar situations, whether a life change due to disability, bereavement or becoming a carer or various other things I have experienced in life in general. Often the most support a person can receive is knowing someone cares, whether it be a face to face chat, on the phone or online. I have vast experience in child care which is where my career lies but I also took a few years out to care for my elderly mum who had leukeamia and dementia, sadly she died in 2010 so I also know the support needed after the death of a loved one.

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
