Hello! I am Jenn. I grew up in Glasgow and come from a mixed Scottish and Italian family. I returned to college in my early twenties to gain qualifications that would allow me to apply for university and I went on to complete a degree in Primary Education. I have been working as a teacher for the last three years - a job which I simply adore.
I have a positive outlook, in spite of the fact that life does not always take the turns that I expect! My life motto is "aut viam inveniam aut faciam" - find a way, or make one!
I decided to study to become a primary teacher as a mature student with all of the joy and difficulties that brought. I completed my four year degree three years ago and I am convinced that it was the best decision I ever made. I had to learn how to make the best use of my time, make friends with students of various ages and backgrounds, resit exams when family life prevented me from studying and frequently doubted my ability to complete my work and make the grade. I am happy to share the lessons that I have learned with others who wish to return to education, no-matter which level, or the subject - you CAN do it!
After being with my partner for nine years, we decided to marry. We had a fantastic fairytale wedding and got stuck into married life. A year and a half later, without warning, my husband told me that 'he no-longer loved me' and that 'our marriage was over.' That was two years ago now and I have overcome the shame and embarrassment that came with pending divorce, discovered who I am as a single person and made a foray into the world of dating. If you have found yourself in a similar position and think that I could be of help, please ask.
Although the stigma of poor mental health is supposedly decreasing, I am aware that those who find themselves living with depression, or caring for someone with depression, can often feel alone. I have experienced both sides of this illness and would love the opportunity to use my experiences to help others. I feel able to give advice on seeking support from professionals, overcoming stigma, battling self-harm, a variety of treatments from medication to talking therapies and living a full life while managing a mental health difficulty. I am not a medical professional, just someone who managed to come through fifteen years of mental health difficulties and now wishes to help others to see that there is no shame in these illnesses, and that they do not mean that you cannot lead a full and fulfilling life.
I have chosen to join Horsesmouth because I would like to share my learning and experiences, something which I wish had been available to me at the time! When you have managed to overcome difficulties, it is often helpful to share with others your experiences. I would like to help others who are facing the same hurdles that I have managed to overcome. Mentoring is a fantastic opportunity - humans are social animals, but in our day-to-day social lives, we may not always find the people or the words to ask for help when we need it - this forum provides a wealth of experience and knowledge for others who are keen to learn - that can only be a great thing!
