Self description

Male , 71

Glasgow born, but having lived in England most of my life, I've been in Sales and Marketing for 40 years. I've run my on Consultancy and Recruitment businesses for some time and would like to pass on some of what I've learned - including the pitfalls (of which there have been many).
I know what it's like to be operating on your own, but also I've worked in the larger corporate world, so understand the problems that this can bring.
I'm father to a grown up son who I'm proud to say is making a success of his life, and I'm actively involved in my local rugby club, where we are proud to develop young people, not just in the sport, but hopefully in their attitudes to life also.
I believe I'm a good listener who can offer practical help and advice, either in business or personal development.

Life experiences

Sales and Marketing

I believe I can offer practical, cost-efficient advice to small business owners who may not be experienced in this field. I've helped many companies in diverse industries, either as an employee or a consultant, to establish and execute workable marketing and promotional plans, as well as running my own recruitment business.
I like to get closely involved, often working within the business rather than just observing and making recommendations.

The Sounding Board

Many people, either running their own business or perhaps at managerial level in a large organisation, have few people they can talk to about the issues which affect both their business and personal lives. Family members can either be too closely involved, or not involved at all, to understand the effects that these issues have on the individual, and it can be more beneficial to talk to a complete stranger - a mentor who can listen without being judgemental.
I believe that I can offer such a service, as I have often done so through business over the years. I also firmly believe that new managers or supervisors are often thrown in at the deep end and promoted without any training, which is potentially harmful to the business. I can mentor and train them to become effective leaders quickly.

Finding a job

Robert Kennedy once said "To succeed greatly in business, it is first necessary to have failed greatly". Now most of us have a great fear of failure, because we believe it will diminish us, both personally and in the eyes of others. Most of the people I talk to have this fear, but why? If everything everyone did was a runaway success, the market couldn't stand it! Many of the top companies know that perhaps only one in ten new products succeed, and even they are usually likely to have a limited life cycle. I would much rather people approached life realising that they, like their favourite team, aren't going to be champions every year. If I can help them deal with that and change their attitude to one which helps them adapt accordingly, then I feel I've been of some help

Why mentor on horsesmouth?

When I was a young sales rep, learning my rudimentary skills, then afterwards as a young manager rising up the corporate ladder, I was fortunate enough to have a couple of wise old heads off whom I could bounce all my problems and frustrations. They weren't my line managers, but were happy to point me in generally the right direction, usually with a few quiet words about how to deal with managers/customers/office politics etc. I believe that many people, either in business for themselves or perhaps in large organisations, don't have this facility and I am more than happy to give any help I can, even if it's just so they can unburden some of their worries. I think that this type of mentoring fills a gap which has been left as society has become more self-centred over the years, which is why I believe horesemouth can offer an invaluable service.

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
