Self description

Female , 29

I am a graduate with a degree in Forensic Psychology. I am not working at the moment as my mother is menatlly ill and she requires full-time care. Right now I am concentrating on helping and looking after my mother. One of my best friends was recently released from Bootham Hospital so I have quite a bit of experience dealing with severe mental health problems.
I am the person that my friends always seem to call when they have a problem or just want a friendly ear. I am the friend that encourages my friends to access their support systems when they need help and advice. But I understand that sometimes that is not possible.
I am creative because I like to think of new and different ways to solve problems and make chages in my life. I am passionate about life in general and helping people. I am also more than willing to help anyone with anything if I feel that I can

Life experiences

Mental Health

I have studied mental health as a side-line at University. I also have personal experience in this field as my mother is currently severely mentally ill and one of my best friends is currently recovering from a severe mental illness. I have both the academic and personal background.

Bullying and Self harm.

I was bullied quite badly at school for a few years and my life became very dark for a while. I stopped eating for a time but my parents noticed that I was throwing a lot my food away so I stopped so they would not notice there was something wrong. I then moved onto self harming and writing poetry. I quickly became addicted to self harming and it is and always will be something that I am battling against. Again I studied it briefly at University. And although the academic side did not help me to understand why I did it as I know why I did. It helped me to realise why certain populations such as prison groups may be inclined to self harm. I have also accessed a lot of self harming help websites when I am see my risk factors so I know some good places to look. Many of these websites have coping strategies, some of which I have personally tried.

Being a carer.

Separate from the fact that my mother is mentally ill I know very well how it is to be a carer. I have sacrificed a lot to look after and help my mother and I know that sometimes those sacrifices that we make can go unnoticed. I know that being a carer can be very daunting at first. I know how upsetting it can be to help someone look after their personal hygiene for the first time. I have been a carer for quite some time now. I have useful systems to help myself with my mothers different medications and hospital appointments and doctors appointments and mental health team appointments.

Why mentor on horsesmouth?

My motivation for joining horsesmouth is me wanting to help people. Although I am young I do have quite a bit of life experience and if I can use that, even the bad things, to help someone else then it will all have been worth it. I cannot physically go out and dedicate a lot of time to helping people through employment or through many hours volunteering as my personal situation does not allow it. But I still want to help people in a positive way. Mentoring in this way allows me to do that. I think that mentoring in this way is a brilliant idea as it gives people a chance to access so many different points of view and stories that they would not be able to otherwise. It is also sometimes easier to ask for advice when you have a computer inbetween you. As some people find it hard to ask for advice face to face or from people they know.

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
