Driven , Ambitious , Logical
I work and live on the outskirts of central london and am currently nearing the end of my second year as an apprentice. At the moment, I work in a change team but would like to see other areas of the business if possible.
I joined the apprenticeship after a relative of mine suggested it and sent me the link to the site. I applied and was lucky enough to get onto the scheme after some online screening and an interview. I was placed in a change team after a few months in the company and the manager of the team has given me some good responsiblity to show what I can do and I would like to think I have repaid this faith. My abitition is to go as high up as I can in the company and hopefully I can do this by working hard, showing patience, enthusiasm and taking the opportuinities when they are presented.
Outside of work, I like to watch and participate in sports, especially football, and enjoy socialising with my friends whenever I can.
Something I am very proud of is my GCSE and A-Level results because I worked extremely hard to achieve good grades which were above my expectations. The hard work was well worth it as th results will always stay with me and ultimately helped me get a place on the BT apprenticeship scheme.
As I work for a small team. I am required to cover a manager's role when they go on holiday or are sick. I am particularly pleased with this acheivement because not many apprentices get an opportunity to do such a role or have that amount of reponsiblity shown in them. Admittedly I was sceptical and nervous when this was first propostion to me, becuase I was an apprentice and I had only been with the team a few months. After some reassurance from my management I was happy to take it on. In the first couple of weeks of covering it was a bit nerve-racking because I was required to do things that I had never done before such as manage conference calls with customers, project managers, engineers etc who were vastly more expereinced than me and also make some decisons on my own initiative. After more than a year of covering the role I am very comfortable doing it now and enjoy doing it. I was glad I got the opportunity becuase I could show what I could do and surprised myself a little.
One of the more enjoyable expereinces I have had in my short time with the company I am in is that I was able to take part in the 2009 apprenticeship recruitment video. The video included an interview with myself and a few other apprentices and also some dodgy acting on my part. It was extremely exciting as it was something I had never done before but something I would like to do again.
I have joined this mentoring program beacuse I would like to be able to help young people make a decison on their future. I know how hard and scary it maybe trying to fit into a big company and I think I can help ease some of the fears people have as I went through the same experiences. I also feel that apprenticeships aren't promoted strongly enough to young people as a lot of people at college see going to university as the default and only option and I would like to make people aware that their are options available to them. I think apprenticeships are excellent opportunities for younf people and I would like to help in anyway I can.
