Half Portuguese, Half Australian, born in London. I was a musician & record producer for 10 years, then took a break to recharge my batteries lecturing at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Discovered there that my creativity was best satisfied by facilitating others. After a couple of years, I went from there to the British Council where I was Music Projects Manager for Africa, Middle East & South Asia. Yes it was as much fun as it sounds. Left there to become Director of Performing Arts at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, then moved on to set up my own arts consultancy and event producer in 2002. In 2004 I was awarded a fellowship of the Clore Leadership Programme in its first year. Currently what I do is give advice to creative businesses and individuals. I also run a little business making and selling yoga products. What I really enjoy is seeing creative people fulfilling their potential - particularly if they wouldn't have got there without my help.
I've worked in music for over 20 years. I've been a musician, record producer, event producer, songwriter, consultant and advisor. I currently advise companies like the BBC and UK Music, particularly on how the music industry can thrive in the digital realm
By this, I mean government and trust funded arts. I know my way around organisations like the Arts Council (who I advise), MLA and various trusts and foundations. These need a quite different approach and language than for-profit businesses
I have set up 6 for-profit businesses. 4 have made money. 2 have lost money. I know some of the pitfalls to avoid and some of the stuff to check for - from who's in your team, to how to raise money, to how to grow
I've mentored ever since I started worked. It tests my ideas, keeps my view fresh and introduces me to inspiring people. I love to see people succeeding doing the things they really want to do. Dreams happen on their own; reality takes a bit more planning...
