Approachable , Understanding & Caring , Easy-going
I have recently retired after over 40 years working in the NHS as a Biomedical Scientist in different parts of the UK. My wife and I have two grown-up children and a two year old grandson living nearby. We look after our grandson one & half days per week.
We recently moved house so I've been spending much of my time getting the house the way we want it.
I'm now looking for interests to make the most of retirement.
The last 25 years of my working life was spent in management. I also hold a management qualification specialising in Human Resources (Personnel) In my last post managing 75 staff, I frequently had to deal with grievance and conflict. Maybe I could advise someone experiencing difficulties in the workplace? Are you experiencing harrasment at work for example and lost as to what to do?
Once staff found I was very approachable, I also had some confiding in me regarding personal problems not connected to work such as relationship issues. Could this experience be of help to anyone?
Work interviews. I interviewed many times to fill vacancies and could provide tips on how to succeed at interview.
With over 40 years experience working within the NHS in Pathology and research, I could provide an insight into a career in the sciences, including research. Also, I could advise on the wide range of other career oportunities in the NHS.
Speaking in public.
I have lectured to university students at MSc level and spoken at conferences and informally. I appreciate speaking to a group of people can be a daunting task; I could offer some tips.
Even speaking at a wedding is frightening to some; I've been a best man twice and 'Father of the Bride' once!
I had a book published and contribuited to several scientific papers. Writing formally can be difficult so maybe I can help?
As I have recently retired, I was looking for some ways in which I might help others. I came accross 'Horsemouth' whilst searching voluntary oportunities on the Internet. the concept of capturing and sharing a wealth of life-long experiences struck me as a brilliant idea and I'm really excited about getting involved. As well as hopefully being able to give useful advice, with any luck someone might help me with ideas on things to do in retirement.
