Celebrating the wisdom of our older mentors on horsesmouth.co.uk on Silver Surfers' Day

May 21st is national Silver Surfers Day so we want to celebrate the older mentors of our community for the brilliant advice and wisdom they share, whether through their stories, their responses to requests or their one-to-one mentoring.

Our older users tell us that  Silver Surfers want Social Media with Meaning. They do appreciate the value of being online and connected – to family, resources and public services, but they also want to contribute online – and to connect with new people.

Our older mentors see Horsesmouth as a trusted place online where they can easily, conveniently and safely “give sometime back” and participate in social media in a meaningful way.  As Cherokee, one of our most “senior” mentors at the age of 80, says “I want to give something back because I have been extraordinarily lucky in life in so many ways that I feel deeply for those less fortunate.”

Whether offering advice to their peers or those younger than them, these mentors offer valuable life perspective and experience on a vast range of subjects from business to family life and health. See some inspiring reasons why some of our older mentors are enjoying mentoring and being connected on horsesmouth.co.uk

To help even more wise and experienced people get the most out of being online, we’re joining Silver Surfers' Day in calling for people over 55 to take advantage of a free computer taster session to get them started.  Silver Surfers’ Day is showcasing everything that older people can do online and more than 1,500 Silver Surfer’s day events are being held at libraries, Age Concern branches, voluntary organisations, community centres and schools. All registered events are listed on a searchable database or you can find events near you by phoning 0800 100 900.

Here at Horsesmouth we already have an active Silver Surfer community but we’d love to encourage even more people to join and start sharing their wisdom. So we’re asking everyone in our community to get in touch with older (55+) wiser (!) friends or parents who they think might enjoy giving and gaining on Horsesmouth. It's all private, anonymous, safe and a fun meaningful way to be online.

Mentoring online is just one of the ways people can get the most out of life after 50. For more ideas, whether you're 50+ and fabulous, or 50+ and fearful about what the future may hold, get in touch with the great FiftyForward mentors on Horsesmouth.

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.

well what a geat website! in all honestly, i basically typed in "agony aunts online" while on a down day just expecting some upbeat optimism on the computer, and came across this site. it is so much better than just reading a passage on a website, to actually talk to REAL people for honest advice and listening about particular subjects rather than a general overview.

I just want to say thanks to everyone who replied to one of my recent shout outs about forgiving - every message was useful and some very helpful indeed! It really feels good to know other people understand how i've been feeling, and to know there are people not far from me to help! Thanks so much, and everyone please don't hesitate to get in touch if I can help anyone with any problem you may be having xxx
